Unicare Health would like to thank Melanie Day, Clinical Fieldwork Coordinator and Lecturer at Edith Cowan University for inviting us to provide manual handling equipment training for Occupational Therapy undergraduates advancing into residential aged care placements this semester.
Placements in residential aged care facilities is an integral part of a student’s occupational therapy education at Edith Cowan University. It provides students with opportunities to practice new skills, model after their seniors, and explore the application of didactic and theoretical knowledge acquired in class.
As part of the occupational therapy degree, students are required to participate in a minimum of 1,000 hours of placements, clinical fieldwork and practice education for the application of theory to practice. These are mandatory experiences for students, to prepare adequately for future work as an occupational therapist.
Unicare Health’s clinical educator and trainer, Annette Terranova, was invited to provide manual handling equipment training for aged care.
Students need to be familiar with these practical skills during their placements.
Starting with the basics, Annette introduced the different types of manual handling equipment commonly supplied by Unicare Health to residential aged care facilities.
These include the Ansa Alto Lifting Hoist, Ansa Salsa Standing Hoist, Oxford Journey Standing Hoist, RoMedic Return Standing Aid and QuickMove Standing Aid.
Annette provided a practical training session on these pieces of equipment and discussed their suitability for clients with different needs.
Every student had a chance playing the role of a therapist and client to fully understand how these pieces of equipment provide a safe transfer solution for both user and caregiver.
Annette provided lots of practical and safety tips for students and taught them useful skills such as how to get a sling under a client and how to avoid skin tears when hoisting an aged client.
Unicare Health would like to thank Melanie and the University for inviting Unicare Health to be part of your education program. We enjoyed a fantastic time with your occupational therapy students and trust that the knowledge and skills we’ve shared will add significant value during their residential aged care placements.
