What are pressure injuries costing your aged care facility every year?
Pressure ulcers are a major contributor to morbidity, mortality and decreased quality of life in the nursing home. Elderly residents are particularly at risk of developing a pressure ulcer if immobile, incontinent or cognitively impaired.
Pressure injuries are largely avoidable injuries. A lot of pain can be reduced and money saved from preventing moderate pressure injuries (Stage I and II) from developing into severe cases (Stage III and IV).
On 26 July 2017, Unicare Health’s Occupational Therapist and Product Consultant, Annette Terranova, conducted a very successful and interactive pressure care management and seating/positioning training session for care givers at Aegis aged care group in St. James.
Unicare Health was invited by Aegis St. James to talk about pressure care, prevention techniques, and introduce pressure care equipment that can prevent pressure injuries, as part of their continued strive for excellence in caring for the elderly.
Annette’s training session covered the principles of pressure care, developmental stages of pressure injuries, and then focussed on how care givers can play a part in pressure care injury prevention and management. Annette’s training session also covered patient seating and positioning across different equipment, including safe moving and handling techniques so that care givers could have an in-depth understanding of how pressure sores develop and how they can be prevented.
Most pressure injuries are preventable if appropriate measures are implemented.
Unicare Health has a huge range of quality pressure care products such as care of sweden alternating pressure mattresses, a world class product proven to prevent pressure ulcers and even treating pressure ulcers up to and including Stage IV.
Our line of award winning Wissner Bosserhoff nursing beds feature BiNetic patient surfaces with double retraction for effective pressure ulcer prevention.
Care givers at Aegis aged care group St. James were full of praises for Annette at the end of the training session, complimenting her for being a fantastic presenter, and thanked her for her very insightful and engaging training session.
Some feedback from participants at the training session:
“After attending this training session, we now have better insight on how to reposition residents and perfectly care for them”
“Best pressure care training I have had”
Compliments from Cynthia Wright – Facility manager at Aegis St. James:
